Chapter Eleven

Wynn checked her borrowed shoulder tote for the nine millionth time. Usually, she carried a battered canvas messenger bag filled with herbs and potions and magical supplies all lumped together with her ID, money, and the detritus of her everyday life, but today she needed to project the illusion of professionalism, so the black leather laptop carrier cum designer handbag had been pressed into service. She had nightmares about scratching it before she could return it to the friend who had lent it to her, but she was trying to ignore them. She had enough to worry about without those piling on.

She had left Knox sitting at a table outside a chic café in the atrium of CG Towers. On the one hand, she’d felt relief at putting some distance between them. He had barely spoken to her since the scene in her bedroom last night, and being anywhere near him made her feel as if she’d simultaneously kicked a puppy and turned into one before getting kicked herself. She hadn’t been trying to hurt him; she’d simply been trying to protect herself from getting hurt. Unfortunately, she was discovering that his coldness caused her plenty of pain, so she appeared to be screwed either way.

On the other hand, every step she took away from her Guardian and toward the offices of Coleman Enterprises made her wish fervently that she’d included Knox in her cover story. Just having him by her side made her feel safer, a feeling she’d somehow grown accustomed to over the last couple of weeks. Now she found herself almost missing his coldness, because at least feeling his stony presence meant he was close by. This whole solo-investigating thing sucked as far as Wynn was concerned.

Hoping to distract herself from her bout of nerves, Wynn forced herself to take in her surroundings. CG Towers had officially opened its doors while she had been in Montreal, after two years of lightning-fast construction, so this was the first time she had visited the gleaming skyscraper located just a short block off the city’s famous Magnificent Mile. Clearly designed to impressed, the main entrance gave into the atrium, a shining, marble-covered wonderland populated by a buzzy big-name chef’s latest restaurant, the gourmet coffee-serving café where she’d left Knox, and a handful of very high-end boutiques selling women’s shoes and handbags, luxury perfumes and bath products, and ridiculously expensive shaving supplies. She also spotted a branch office of a major regional banking company, and what looked like an old-fashioned luxury stationer. She felt like she’d stepped into an episode of some television show dedicated to making average Americans completely discontent with their own lives.

The elevator that carried her up to the sixtieth floor sported copper-clad doors and an interior paneled in real wood with large, framed mirrors on each of the three stationary walls. Her delicate black flats sank into carpeting so deep, it tempted her to kick the shoes off and curl her toes in the pile. She resisted the temptation.
